The history of Wing Chun began several hundred years ago in a Shaolin monastery in the south of China. In opposition to the monastery in the north the monastery in the south does not exist anymore today. Because there is no real scientifically proven evidence of the development of Wing Chun one can only rely on oral tradition.

A constantly recurring historical origin mentions a nun called Ng Mui who allegedly invented the system Wing Chun to be able to fight against strong, experienced warriors. She thought it the prettiest girl Yim Wing Chun to free her from a difficult situation. This is how the Martial Arts style got its name which means „beautiful spring“.

Another version of the story claims that some very good warriors teamed up in the hall of „beautiful spring“ in a monastery to unite there different styles to an ultimate fighting style.

Despite the ancient legends which claim to know the historical origin of Wing Chun one can not deny the fact that all of them lead in some way to a opera troupe who were in the so called „Red Junk“. One of the verifiable teachers of Wing Chun is Dr. LeungJan who also learned the Martial Arts system from the people of the opera troupe.

Today there are many different notations: Wing Tsun (W. T.), Ving Tsun (V. T.), Wing Tzun, Wing Chung, Wing Shun, Wing Tsung, Wyng Tjun or Ving Chun (V. C.). The reason for this are trademark distinctions.

Despite various advancements all system types refer to the last real recorded master of the system called Yip Man.
